Learn when to keep the PRF-82 protection filter on, when to remove it, and how to fix flare, cleaning, and stacking problems with practical diagnosis steps.

Quick answer

Keep the PRF-82 protection filter mounted for general shooting, but remove it when you see flare, ghosting, or softening that disappears without it. Clean it only with proper tools, and avoid stacking it with other filters unless you have tested the combination.

Why the PRF-82 stays on most of the time

The PRF-82 is designed to protect the lens from dust and dirt, so it earns its place in dusty, sandy, or crowded environments where front-element contact is likely. Its Super EBC coating limits harmful reflections by achieving a surface reflectivity of 0.3% or less, which helps preserve contrast in typical lighting.

That protection is not unconditional. Any filter adds two extra glass surfaces to the optical path, and those surfaces can interact with strong light sources or with other filters. The goal is to use the PRF-82 as a default, then remove it when conditions or image results tell you it is doing more harm than good.

When removal makes more sense than protection

Remove the filter when you are shooting directly into the sun, stage lights, or other bright sources and you notice flare, ghosting, or a veiling haze that vanishes without the filter. Also remove it if you see a loss of sharpness or contrast that cannot be explained by focus, aperture, or lens condition.

A less obvious case is filter stacking. If you screw a polarizer or ND filter onto the PRF-82, you increase the number of air-to-glass surfaces and the chance of vignetting or mechanical binding. For critical work with a second filter, test the stack at your widest focal length and widest aperture before relying on it.

Cleaning mistakes that make flare worse

A dirty or smeared protection filter can create flare and reduced contrast even when the lens itself is clean. Avoid cleaning with a dry tissue or your shirt; those can leave lint or micro-scratches. Use a blower first, then a soft brush, then a lens cloth with a few drops of lens cleaning fluid if needed.

Clean both sides of the filter, not just the front. The rear surface facing the lens can collect dust and fingerprints during handling. After cleaning, inspect the filter under a light at an angle; if you still see a film or streaks, repeat with a fresh cloth.

Diagnose your PRF-82 issue

  • Symptom: flare or ghosting in bright light: Likely cause: reflections between the filter and the front lens element. Corrective action: remove the PRF-82 and re-shoot the same scene. If the flare disappears, leave the filter off for that shot and reattach it afterward. If flare remains without the filter, the issue is in the lens or lighting, not the filter.
  • Symptom: loss of sharpness or contrast: Likely cause: a smeared or dirty filter surface. Corrective action: clean both sides of the filter with a blower, brush, and lens cloth. If the image is still soft, remove the filter and compare. If sharpness returns without the filter after cleaning, replace the filter rather than continuing to clean it.
  • Symptom: vignetting or difficulty attaching a second filter: Likely cause: filter stacking. Corrective action: remove the PRF-82 before mounting a polarizer or ND filter, or test the stack at your widest focal length. If you must stack, use slim-profile accessories where possible. If the stack binds or vignettes even after testing, choose one filter for the shot instead of forcing the combination.
  • Symptom: repeated cleaning does not remove marks: Likely cause: coating damage or a scratched surface. Corrective action: stop cleaning aggressively. Compare images with and without the filter; if contrast or flare worsens with the filter, replace it. A damaged protection filter can degrade every shot, so replace it rather than living with the defect.

Product facts

  • PRF-82 Fujinon Protection Filter: The PRF-82 protection filter is designed to protect the lens from dust or dirt. That makes it a sensible default in environments where front-element contamination is a real risk.

  • PRF-82 Fujinon Protection Filter: Its Super EBC coating achieves a surface reflectivity of 0.3% or less to limit harmful reflections. Lower reflectivity helps control flare and preserve contrast, but it does not eliminate the need to remove the filter when strong light still causes problems.
